THE COMPARISION OF CLOSED REDUCTIONPERCUTANEOUS PINNING PROCEDURE WITH OPEN REDUCTION-INTERNAL FIXATION IN THE SURGICAL TREATMENT OF CHILDREN?S DISPLACED SUPRACONDYLAR FRACTURES OF HUMERUS

Abstract
Purpose: In this study, the results of open reduction internal fixation and closed reduction percutaneous kirschner fixation procedures in the treatment of supracondylar humeral fractures were compared.
Patients and methods: We performed open reduction internal fixation in 43 patients and closed reduction percutaneous kirschner fixation in 21 patients. The functional and cosmetic evaluation of the cases were evaluated according to Flynn?s criteria after a mean follow up of 2.6 years.
Results: Excellent and good results were obtained in 81.39% of the patients in carrying angle and 79.06% of the patients in functional loss treated with open reduction internal fixation technique. Excellent and good results were obtained in 80.94% of the patients in carrying angle and 80.95% of the patients in functional loss treated with closed reduction percutaneous kirshner fixation technique. As a result, the difference between two groups was not statistically significant (p>0.05).
Conclusion: Although closed reduction percutaneous kirshner fixation technique has some advantages such as less surgical trauma, preserve fracture hematoma, open reduction internal fixation technique permits definite fracture reduction in cases which can not be reduced by closed methods and it is as successful as closed reduction percutaneous kirshner fixation technique.
