Abstract

From November 1989 to March 1994 period, 30 open tibial fractures were treated with "Dynamic axial fixator" (Orthofix) external fixation device. There were 4 fractures Type I, 6 Type II and 20 Type III according to the classification of Gustilo et al. There were six nonunions, three amputations (two below knee and one Boyd type), three pin tract infections, four superficial and two deep infections. Pin loosening and mechanical failure were seen in six patients. Type III nine fractures needed bone graft. The Dynamic axial fixator device is an external fixator which is simple to apply, safe and effective for open diaphyseal fractures. We recommend use of Dynamic Axial Fixator, especially open tibial fractures which are appropriate for dynamic axial loading.
