Abstract
Sixty-eight total hip arthroplasties in 54 patients were reviewed regarding the relationship between the heterotopic bone formation (HBF) and the type of prosthesis used. Relationships between the etiology of the coxarthrosis and the use of bulk graft for acetabular reconstruction with HBF were also investigated. The incidence of HBF in all patients was 52.9%. Forty-six cemented hips showed an incidence of 54.3%, while the incidence in 22 non-cemented hips was 50.0. The difference was not statistically significant (p>O.O5). The HBF incidence in 22 hips with primary coxarthrosis was 45.5 % and in 46 hips with secondary coxarthrosis was 56.5 % (p>0.05). Femoral-head bulk grafts were used in 11 patients for acetabular reconstruction. The difference of incidence of HBF in these hips and in the hips reconstructed without bulk graft was not statistically significant, either.
