Abstract

AIM: The aim of this study is light microscopic analysis of the effect of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) on fracture healing in guinea pig model. Materials and
Methods: Ten male adult guinea pigs were randomly divided into two groups as control (K) and low molecular weighl heparin (H), and tibia diaphysis fracture was produced manually in all. A prophylactic dose of 1 50 anti-Xa ICU/kg (6O anti-Xa IU/kg) nadroparin calcium (Fraxiparine Reg. ) was subcutaneously injected in group H, and 0.9% NaCI in group K for 10 days.
Results: Histologic analysis of the fracture sites of both groups revealed haematoma formation on the 3rd day, fibrous callus on the 7th day, cartilage callus on the 14th day and bone callus on the 21 st day. Histologically it was seen that LMWH (nadroparin calcium) had neither positive nor negative effect on fracture heaIing.
Conclusion: When the effect of LMWH on fracture healing is considered, it can be safely used in thromboembolism prophylaxis in pelvis and lower extremity fractures.
