Abstract

Purpose: We reviewed our experience with Leinbach prosthesis in the use of unstable trochanteric hip fractures of elderly. Material and
Method: 39 patients (average age, 74 years) with unstable trochanteric fractures who were treated by the insertion of a Leinbach prosthesis were evaluated retrospectively. The patients followed for an average of 19 months and their clinical and functional results were evaluated according to American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons's scale. Complications were also determined.
Results: The functions of the patients were restored in a short time and unrestricted weight bearing allowed early (average 7.2 days). The hospital stay was shortened (mean 16 days). The incidence of secondery operation because of failure or complications was not present. Trochanter major fracture in 4 patients, deep vein tromboses in 1 patient , wound infection in 3 patients and heterotopic bone formation in 6 patients were present. We have obtained poor functional results in 15% of the patients, moderate results in 15 % of the patients and very good and good results in 70% of the patients
Discussion: To promote early full weight bearing and rapid rehabilitation for the elderly patient with unstable trochanteric fracture, the use of the Leinbach prosthesis is recommended for carefully selected patients.
