Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of rehabilitation program for Thrust Plate Prosthesis (TPP) which is a new approach of the femoral component replacement.
Patients and methods: The mean age of the 30 patients treated by TPP for various etiologies is 54 (26-79) years and they were followed-up for mean 17.6 (6-36) months. The rehabilitation program of the patients began preoperatively and continued after the operation daily and progresively. The patients were evaluated with Modified De Kalp Medical Center Postoperative Follow up Sheet and also with Harris Hip Evaluation System before and after the preoperative and postopreative period.
Results: There were 30 patients (36 hips) who had TPP operation 10 of them were male and 20 of them were female. It has seen that the patients were ambulated the mean day of 2.12 days with partial weigthbearing and their transfers activities has reached to level of minimal help at 3.85 days. They had learned how to climb stairs with the mean day of 6.12 days. At discharge their resting pain was 0.48 and activity pain was 1.64 according to visual analog scale, the mean of the hip flexion was 58.20°, abduction was 40.78° and walking distance 95.19 meters, mean Harris score before operation was 47.25 and it was 96.91 at the latest controls.
Conclusion: The TPP operations with which the femoral bone stock is protected leads a faster rehabilitation program because of its specialities like it is being less invasiv and it lets the early weight bearing to the operated side. And for this reason it helps the people to reach to their indepency level earlier and quality of life of the patients gets higher with this operation.
