Abstract
As a special art, medical illustration has been used effectively in medicine for a long time. Principal purposes of medical illustration are education of health professionals at every stages and scientific publications. Medical illustrators’ are interested in either classical techniques or computer assisted techniques. Contemporary orthopedics interests in large portion of human body, applies detailed surgical techniques and uses ultimate radiological procedures. Therefore importance and applications of illustration in orthopedics is far more than other medical branches. Effective usage of medical illustration in orthopedics provides impressive and permanent expressions on whole documents and audiovisual applications. Scientific institutions have not performed determination of the basics and analyze of the current concepts of medical illustration in our country yet. Aim of this article is review of general principles, history and fundamentals of medical illustration. We also discussed the rules of collaboration between medical illustrator and orthopedic surgeon and applications of medical illustration in orthopedics.
